Rumi’s Poem – The Mosque.
“Do not praise and magnify the mosque
However beautiful, it is the husk
And not the grain. Go seek the Holy Saints.
By delving in their hearts, the soul acquaints
Itself with where the fount of life resides
And where the light of Him alone abides.”
My interpretation – Now, my interpretation of this poem is as follows –
As I understand, Rumi is saying that we should not be impressed by the outer beauty or superficiality of things or people, no matter how amazing it looks to the eyes. Outer beauty is temporary and it is going to die. Inner Soul is the real thing which will live forever.
To find our real inner truth, we should seek association of Enlightened Masters. By being in their company and by learning from them, our soul realizes the source of light or life within us.
As I understand, this poem is all about seeking divine within as eventually we are going to find IT within ourselves and not without.
At the same time, outer world has its own importance. As our sense organs work outside, initially we are bound to search for the divine in outer world only. This is the utilization of outer world that it exhausts us in the search so that eventually we can change direction of our search inwards and experience the Divine within.
So, outer world has its own importance and message here is that journey must continue (first outside and then inside) till we experience the Divine.
Hope this helps. Thanks,
