Rumi’s Poem – Mirror Image.
“In the mirror of my soul, my love.
I see now only your luminous face
My soul and yours are one.
My mind was the master of my house once
Now it is only your servant.
My spirit was love-struck from the start
though a bit concerned by your earthly form.
And now that mud has settled and
My clarity has returned
This you and I are no more!”
My interpretation – Now, my interpretation of this poem is as follows –
One of the important verse of Bible is that God has created Man in his own image.
As I understand it means that we have all qualities of God within us. Understand it like this, if you take a drop out of Ocean and test it in a laboratory then the proportion of minerals in that drop will be akin to proportion of minerals in the Ocean.
Likewise, if God has created us and given us birth then we can’t be much different than the God.
This is what is written in the first line of poem where Rumi says that after having Self-Realization, Rumi has seen only God within him and realized that there is no duality and his Soul and Divine Soul is one.
The thing about human mind is that it is supposed to be servant of heart and consciousness but it has become Master. We even take decisions of Heart through Mind only.
This is where Rumi says that his mind was acting like the Master of this life but now after Self-Realization, Rumi is able to surrender the mind to Divine and Divine Will. This means that now his mind has no criteria of life as to what should happen or what shouldn’t happen. He or his mind is receptive towards anything that life brings.
Then Rumi says that there was no doubt about his Love towards Divine and he was always in love with Him but the confusion or doubt was about the definitions or forms of Divine as per various cultures and traditions. This discrepancy in presentations of Divine used to make him doubtful as to which one to follow and which one to leave.
But now as Rumi himself has realized the Divine, his doubt or confusion about various forms and representations of Divine has gone and he has realized the unity with Divine.
Hope this helps. Thanks,
