Rumi’s Poem – A Gift to bring to you.


“You have no idea how hard I've looked for a gift to bring You. Nothing seemed right.

What's the point of bringing gold to the gold mine, or water to the ocean.

Everything I came up with was like taking spices to the Orient.

It's no good giving my heart and my soul because you already have these.

So I've brought you a mirror. Look at yourself and remember me.”


My interpretation –

We can receive two messages from this poem of Rumi.

First Message -

Osho says in one of his preaching that we go to places of worship and try to offer many things to the Divine but we don’t realize that what we are offering to the Divine, is also coming from the Divine only. If we offer flowers then those flowers were already offered to Divine through nature. If we offer fruits then Divine only gave those fruits to us. If we offer money then Divine only gave us the physical strength to earn that money.

So, can we really offer anything which the Divine didn’t give us in the first place? Is there anything which is our own creation and not given by God?

Well, there is one thing; i.e. The Ego. Human Ego is our only creation. This thought that “I am the doer” is our own creation. Divine hasn’t given us this sense of Ego. Hence, if there is any meaningful gift we can offer to God then that is our Ego. This idea that “I am the doer” is the only thing we can surrender to God after realizing that actually “I am not the doer”.

Second Message -

Then Rumi says – “So I've brought you a mirror. Look at yourself and remember me.”

One of the important quotes from Bible is that “God has created Man in his own image.” It can be understood that we are just his mirror image. So, if we keep the First Message in mind and combine here then we have only acquired the dust over that mirror image and that dust is Ego.

By all the worships or offerings, we try to seek the attention of the Divine towards us, so that he can remember us. Hence, it is said that we should become like a Mirror (without the dust of Ego) then there will be no need for seeking attention of Divine. Divine will look at us and remember Self as we are his mirror image only.
The only barrier to the union with the Divine is our Ego.
