Mahavidyas in Astrology
There was a request to write about Mahavidyas and their link with Astrology. Let’s understand this topic –
As per the information I could gather from various sources, this is a topic more closely connected with Tantra. As I am no expert in Tantra, please don’t consider this article as an authoritative word on this subject. Please have your own research and consult a Tantra expert before following anything in this matter.
Now, let’s understand what is Mahavidya?
Vidya – As per Tantra, the worship of Devi-Shakti or Divine Feminine Power or Goddess is known as Vidyas. Mother Goddess is worshipped in different forms. There are mainly 10 forms of Goddess which are worshipped. They are known as; Goddess Kali, Goddess Tara, Goddess Tripura Sundari, Goddess Bhuvaneshvari, Goddess Tripura Bhairavi, Goddess Chhinnamasta, Goddess Dhumavati, Goddess Bagalamukhi, Goddess Matangi and Goddess Kamala. As they are 10 forms of Goddess, their worship is known as 10 Mahavidyas.
Mahavidyas in Astrology – Then these 10 Goddesses are linked with 9 planets and 1 Lagna in an Astrological Chart. They are connected as follows –
Goddess Kali is linked with Saturn, Goddess Tara is linked with Jupiter, Goddess Tripura Sundari is linked with Mercury, Goddess Bhuvaneshvari is linked with Moon, Goddess Chinnamasta is linked with Rahu, Goddess Tripura Bhairavi is linked with Lagna, Goddess Dhumavati is linked with Ketu, Goddess Bagalamukhi is linked with Mars, Goddess Matangi is linked with Sun, and Goddess Kamala is linked with Venus.
These 10 incarnations of Goddess Energy are then also linked with 10 incarnation of Lord Vishnu. They are connected as follows –
Goddess Kali is linked with Krishna Avtar, Goddess Tara is linked with Rama Avtar, Goddess Tripura Sundari is linked with Vamana Avtar, Goddess Bhuvaneshvari is linked with Kalki Avtar, Goddess Chinnamasta is linked with Narasimha Avtar, Goddess Tripura Bhairavi is linked with Varaha Avtar, Goddess Dhumavati is linked with Matsya Avtar, Goddess Bagalamukhi is linked with Kurmi Avtar, Goddess Matangi is linked with Parashuram, and Goddess Kamala is linked with Balaram Avtar.
Then there are obvious Mantras, Worships and Prayers linked with every incarnation of Goddess mentioned above. It is claimed that reciting such Mantras and doing those worships can help a person strengthening the respective planets attached with these Goddess energies. Again, I have no such experience of reciting any Mantra and doing any worship to “get” anything. So, I can’t say if these worships or Mantras will work or not. If you wish, you can try.
For me, worshipping means being thankful to God or Goddess energy for everything He/She has already done for us without eve asking. At times, I feel that most of humanity is ungrateful. We are never thankful to God/Goddess for what we have and we are always demanding for more. I feel the moment I add a demand in my worship, it is no longer worship. The moment I say that “I am doing this worship and now do that work for me”, rest assured that I am interested neither in worship nor in God. I am only interested in getting that particular thing. It is not worship. It is a bargain or even bribe. So, my way of approaching God is very different. As Osho says that “Go towards your God as a Lover, not as a Beggar”.
I can add another Osho Wisdom on Divine Goddess energy –
"Have you ever seen the statue of Kali?
She is the mother and death also, kal, means death so her name is Kali.
And she is the mother, so she is a woman.
She is beautiful, beautiful like a mother. Nobody else can be as beautiful as the mother.
Even if one's own mother is ugly, she seems beautiful. Nobody thinks in terms of the beauty of the mother, but the mother is beautiful.
Because if you see your mother as ugly, then that means that you are ugly because you are her expansion.
So Kali is beautiful, very beautiful But around her neck she is wearing a garland of human heads.
She is beautiful, but she is Kali- kal, death.
Western thinkers are puzzled over this symbol.
They wonder why a woman should be depicted so horribly, so terrifying.
And you call her mother also!
How frightening it is horrible, be-cause death starts from the one who gives birth.
It is terrible, because death has arrived along with the birth.
The mother has given death as well as life.
So on one side she is as beautiful as the mother, as the source, and on the other end she is like kal, death, as dark as death.
Around her neck is a garland of human heads in her hand she is holding a severed head, blood dripping, and she is standing, with her feet on her husband.
This is a very deep symbol: woman as life, and as death too.
Because death comes from where life comes, these two are the two sides of the same coin.
And nobody else on this earth realized this fact as the Hindus have done."
