Philosophy of Third Eye: From Mythology to Awareness

Introduction - Whenever we talk about the Concept or Philosophy of Third Eye, the first thing that comes to our mind is the Agya Chakra, which is believed to be situated between the two eyebrows. It is generally said that the opening of the Third Eye is a sign of enlightenment, spiritual evolution, and a highly evolved state of consciousness. It is also believed that only a rare few individuals can experience the opening of the Third Eye.

In mythology, we have the example of Lord Shiva, whose Third Eye is associated with destruction. They say that whenever Lord Shiva opens his Third Eye, something is destroyed.

Now, what does it actually mean to open the Third Eye? Is it really an extraordinary spiritual experience available only to a few rare individuals, or is there a much simpler and more practical meaning behind this concept?

Let's try to understand this through the perspective of awareness.

Third Eye and Mythology - As we know, Lord Shiva is depicted with three eyes. The two eyes represent the ability to see the world, whereas the Third Eye is associated with a deeper dimension of perception and the power of destruction.

Whenever Shiva opens his Third Eye, destruction follows - Now, if we look at this literally, we may conclude that the Third Eye is some extraordinary physical or spiritual faculty that only a few highly evolved individuals possess. We may even begin to believe that opening the Third Eye is an exceptional event that can happen only after years of spiritual practices.

However, Osho often encourages us to understand mythology as poetry. Mythological stories are not necessarily meant to be understood only at their literal level. They can contain metaphors and symbolic representations of deeper psychological and spiritual realities.

Therefore, the important question is not merely what happens when Lord Shiva opens his Third Eye, but what this Third Eye represents in our own lives. What if the Third Eye is not simply about developing some extraordinary faculty? What if it represents something that is already present within us, but which we have not learned to use consciously?

What Is the Correct Perspective on the Third Eye? - Most of us are blessed with two eyes, which help us see the external world. Through these eyes, we observe people, places, objects, and events happening around us. However, these eyes cannot directly help us see what is happening within our own consciousness.

For example, when we become angry, we can see the person or situation that has triggered our anger. But can we see our own anger while it is happening? Can we observe the thoughts, emotions, and unconscious reactions that are operating within us? Similarly, when we become extremely happy, sad, fearful, or excited, we generally become identified with that particular emotion. We do not merely experience happiness or sadness; we start seeing the entire world through the lens of that emotion.

This is where the metaphor of the Third Eye becomes interesting. As I understand it, the Third Eye represents the eye of awareness or consciousness. It is the capacity to observe our inner world, our thoughts, our emotions, our reactions, and the movements of our own mind. The two physical eyes help us see the external world, whereas the metaphorical Third Eye helps us become conscious of what is happening within us. In simple words, the Third Eye is the ability to see ourselves.

The Mind and Its Two Extremes - To understand this further, we need to understand how the mind generally functions. Most of the time, our mind operates through extremes. Sometimes we are extremely happy, and sometimes we are extremely sad. Sometimes we love someone intensely, and at other times, we may develop an equally intense dislike for the same person. Sometimes we feel highly motivated to do something, whereas at other times, we lose all motivation. Our minds keep moving between these opposite ends.

The problem is not that happiness, sadness, love, dislike, motivation, or disappointment exist in our lives. These are all natural human experiences. The problem begins when we become completely identified with one of these experiences. When we are extremely happy, we may make decisions that we later regret. When we are extremely angry, we may say things that damage our relationships. When we are extremely fearful, we may reject opportunities that could have helped us grow.

In each of these situations, our decision-making is largely influenced by the state of mind we are experiencing at that particular moment. We are not consciously observing the mind. Instead, we are allowing the mind to decide everything for us. This is what I would call an unconscious way of living.

Third Eye as the Balancing Point Between Two Extremes - Now, let us consider what happens when awareness enters this process.

Suppose you are extremely angry with someone. Ordinarily, you may react immediately because your mind is completely occupied by anger. However, if you become aware of your anger, something changes. You begin to recognize that anger is arising within you. You can observe the thoughts accompanying that anger. You can see how your mind is interpreting the other person's behaviour and how these interpretations are influencing your reactions. At that moment, you are no longer completely lost in anger. A part of your consciousness is observing the anger. This observation creates a little distance between you and your mental state. You may still experience anger, but you are no longer compelled to act entirely under its influence.

The same thing can happen with happiness, fear, sadness, excitement, attachment, and every other mental or emotional state. This is where I understand the Third Eye as the balancing point between two extremes. It is the capacity to step back from the mind and observe both extremes without being completely identified with either of them. When we are at one extreme, we usually fail to see the other side. Awareness helps us look at the situation from a wider perspective. We can then make a more balanced and judicious decision.

Please note that this does not mean we must always remain neutral or avoid taking a stand. Sometimes a clear and decisive action is necessary. Awareness simply helps us act with greater understanding rather than reacting mechanically under the influence of an extreme mental state. Therefore, the Third Eye is not about suppressing the mind or eliminating emotions. It is about becoming conscious of them.

Opening of the Third Eye: Becoming Conscious of Consciousness - Now, we can come to the most important question: What does the opening of the Third Eye actually mean?

As I understand it, the opening of the Third Eye is nothing but becoming conscious  and then becoming conscious of our own consciousness. Ordinarily, we remain so occupied with our thoughts, emotions, desires, fears, and external circumstances that we rarely observe the process through which we experience life. We become angry, but we do not observe anger. We become fearful, but we do not observe fear. We make decisions, but we rarely examine the unconscious conditioning influencing those decisions. We are living, but much of our life is being lived mechanically.

The moment we begin observing these processes, a different dimension of our existence becomes available to us. We begin to recognize our patterns. We become more conscious of our reactions. We may discover that many of our desires are influenced by social conditioning, many of our fears are based on imagined possibilities, and many of our decisions are driven by unconscious emotional needs. This awareness does not necessarily eliminate every problem from our lives. However, it can change the way we understand and respond to those problems.

For example, earlier, a particular situation might have made us extremely angry, and we might have reacted immediately. With greater awareness, we may recognize our anger, understand its source, and decide how to respond. The external situation may remain the same, but our relationship with that situation changes. This is the practical significance of opening the Third Eye.

It is not necessarily about acquiring some supernatural power. It is about developing the capacity to see what was previously operating in darkness. And once we begin seeing our inner world more clearly, our actions can become more conscious. So, try to live more and more consciously in order to open your Third Eye.

Why Does Destruction Follow the Opening of Shiva's Third Eye? - Now, let us return to the mythological representation of Lord Shiva. Why does destruction follow the opening of His Third Eye?

If we understand the Third Eye as a metaphor for awareness, the answer becomes quite interesting. When awareness enters our lives, it begins to destroy our unconscious ways of living.

Consider how many of our decisions are influenced by fear, insecurity, social conditioning, attachment, ego, and the desire for approval. We may spend years pursuing something simply because society has told us that it is desirable. We may remain attached to certain people because we are afraid of being alone. We may reject opportunities because we are afraid of failure. We may continue repeating the same mistakes because we have never observed the patterns behind them. Most of these processes continue because we are not fully conscious of them.

However, when awareness begins to illuminate these patterns, their unconscious hold over us can weaken. We may start questioning beliefs that we previously accepted without examination. We may stop reacting in the same habitual manner. We may begin making decisions that are different from what our conditioning would normally dictate. In other words, the old, unconscious way of living begins to dissolve. This is the destruction I understand in the metaphor of Shiva's Third Eye.

The destruction is not necessarily of the external world. It is the destruction of our unconscious identification with the mind, our mechanical reactions, and the patterns that have been running our lives without our understanding. The person may continue to live in the same house, work in the same profession, and interact with the same people. Yet, internally, a transformation may be taking place. Things that once controlled the person may no longer have the same influence. Therefore, the opening of the Third Eye and the destruction that follows it can be understood as two aspects of the same process. Awareness illuminates what was hidden, and whatever can no longer survive that awareness begins to dissolve.

Is the Experience of the Third Eye Available Only to Rare Individuals? - This brings us to another important question. If the Third Eye represents awareness, is it really true that only a rare few individuals can experience its opening?

I do not understand it that way. The potential for awareness is present in every human being. We all have the capacity to observe our thoughts, recognize our emotions, question our conditioning, and become conscious of our actions. Of course, people differ in their willingness to explore this possibility, the depth of their observation, and the extent to which awareness influences their lives.

Some individuals may spend years exploring meditation, spirituality, and self-inquiry. Others may never feel the need to question their habitual ways of living. But this does not mean that awareness itself belongs exclusively to a privileged or highly evolved minority. Even an ordinary moment can provide an opportunity to experience this dimension of consciousness. When you become angry and recognize your anger without immediately reacting, awareness is functioning. When you notice a fearful thought and realize that the thought is not necessarily a fact, awareness is functioning. When you observe your own desire, understand its source, and consciously decide whether to act upon it, awareness is functioning. These may not be dramatic mystical experiences, but they illustrate the same basic capacity for conscious observation.

Therefore, I would not say that only a rare few can open their Third Eye. I would rather say that only a few people may choose to explore awareness deeply and allow it to transform their way of living. The distinction is important.

Does the Third Eye Close Again Once It Has Opened? - There is one more point I would like to consider. If the opening of the Third Eye represents the recognition of awareness, does it ever close again?

My understanding is that we need to distinguish between the presence of awareness and our ability to remain conscious of it. The capacity to be aware does not have to be created from scratch. We can begin observing our thoughts and emotions because the possibility of observation is already available to us. However, our attention can still become absorbed in the mind. We can become distracted, react mechanically, and temporarily forget to observe what is happening within us. Therefore, it would be difficult to claim that a person who has experienced awareness can never again become unconscious in any situation.

What may change is the person's relationship with unconsciousness itself. Once we begin recognizing our habitual patterns, we may become better able to notice when we are being carried away by them. We may return to awareness more readily, even after moments of forgetfulness. With deeper understanding, awareness may become a more natural and consistent part of our lives.

In this sense, the important question is not whether the Third Eye remains permanently open as some special spiritual achievement. The more practical question is whether we are becoming increasingly conscious of our own consciousness and allowing that awareness to influence our actions. Awareness is not a trophy to be acquired. It is a way of experiencing life.

Conclusion - This is how I understand the philosophy of the Third Eye, its opening, and the destruction associated with it in the mythology of Lord Shiva. The two physical eyes help us see the external world, whereas the metaphorical Third Eye represents the capacity to observe our inner world. The mind generally moves between extremes, and we often become so identified with these extremes that our decisions and actions are influenced by unconscious reactions.

Awareness allows us to step back, observe these movements, understand both sides of a situation, and respond with greater clarity. As this awareness deepens, our unconscious patterns may begin to dissolve. The way we have lived for years may no longer appear inevitable, and the beliefs that once controlled us may lose their hold. This is the destruction I understand as the consequence of opening Shiva's Third Eye: the destruction of an unconscious way of living.

We do not necessarily need to wait for an extraordinary mystical experience to begin this process. We can start by observing our thoughts, emotions, desires, fears, and actions in everyday life. The potential for awareness is already within us. What differs is our willingness to explore it. Most people may prefer to continue living according to their existing conditioning, without questioning the patterns that govern their lives. Others may begin to observe, inquire, and discover a different way of being.

Therefore, perhaps the real distinction is not between people who possess a Third Eye and those who do not. Perhaps the distinction is between those who remain content with unconscious living and those who begin exploring the possibility of living with awareness. And maybe, this is the real message hidden in the metaphor of Shiva's Third Eye. It is not merely an eye that destroys the world outside. It is the awakening of awareness that begins to destroy the unconscious world within us.
